Main Activity

Start with yesterday’s KWL chart and ask your child if there’s anything they might like to add. Once you have finished, set it aside where you can access it later. Tell your student that along with the title of the newspaper, all reports need headlines and by-lines. Ask your student if they know what a headline or by-line is. Explain that a by-line tells us who wrote the article and can be found under the headline. Explain that a headline usually has only four or five words.  The idea of a headline is to attract the interest of the readers by telling them in an interesting and short way what the story is about. You want to grab the reader’s attention, but you also want to leave the reader eager to find out more. It must be written using clear and accurate language. Please see the Headlines Resource for some examples.

Try playing the game below to fine tune your sense of what a newspaper requires.  (Tip: Ensure you drag the coloured dot of the label,  to the white dot space on the newspaper).

PLAY – Newspaper Feature Quiz (Wordwall)

If you have any local newspapers, spend a few minutes looking at them together and try to identify the different features that were in the quiz (you will do more of this next lesson, so this should be a short activity).

Now, you are going to have a go at creating your own headlines. To help you write these headlines, please see the Headline Techniques resource.
