Today's Lesson
Spelling
Look at the words below and do a pre-test. This means that you are checking how well your student can spell these words before you teach them. You do not need to focus on the words your student spelled correctly the first time.
Rule: Words with the /k/ sound spelt ch (Greek in origin) (e.g. echo, chemist... etc.)
- scheme
- chorus
- chemist
- echo
There are many activities you can do during the week to practice spellings. Please see the Spelling Activity Sheet in General Resources and use them as you see fit for your student.
Dictation
For this exercise, do exactly as you did in Lesson 1 last week.
- To recycle plastic has been a good scheme.
- Singing in the chorus of the choir was fun.
- Claire got her medicine from the chemist.
- The voices made an echo sound in the tunnel.
Main Activity
Tell your student that today you are going to begin studying poetry from around the world.
Show your student the following websites and read some of the poetry about different festivals around the world. Please browse the following websites before your lesson to check the content. They do change frequently and we want to be sure the content is appropriate for your student!
π EXPLORE β Festival Poems
Make a list on a sheet of paper or blank screen of festivals your student celebrates as well as those they are aware others celebrate in their own homes (keep this list for use later).
Perhaps Christmas, Eid, Chinese New Year, Pancake day, Guy Fawkes, Diwali, Hanukah, etc. Respond to your studentβs requests and read 2 or 3 poems from the websites above or those you discover on your own. Before you read the poem, be sure to read a short description about the festival.
Ask your student to choose at least one poem and complete a review of it using the Poetry Response Sheet.
