Introduction
Remind your student of your discussion about books.
Explain that the books that you have been discussing and looking at can call be categorised as non-narrative or non fiction, meaning they don’t give an account of events.
Tell your student that today you are going to look at a dictionary and thesaurus. Ask: do you know the difference between these two books? Explain that both contain lists of words in alphabetical (ABC) order but that the thesaurus also gives alternate words that mean the same thing. We call these synonyms.
Main Activity
Ask your student to look up the word ‘nice’ in both the dictionary and the thesaurus. Talk about the entries in the two books and how they address the word. Select a number of other words (good, happy, angry, fast) and ask your student to look them up. Discuss what they notice or observe.
Ask your student: Which book would you use if you were reading a book and encountered a word you didn’t understand? What book would you use if you were editing and or improving a story? Why? Why do you think the words are put in alphabetical order? What would it be like if you tried to look up a word and they were not in alphabetical order?
