Main Activity
ntroduce The Day I Swapped my Dad for Two Goldfish by telling your student that this story is a retelling of the old tale of an object that gets swapped from person to person, until the original owner needs it back.

Ask your student if they know what ‘swapping’ is. If they don’t, look it up in the dictionary. Next ask, have you swapped things with other people? Do you remember a time when someone swapped with you, then changed their mind? Or perhaps you were the one who changed their mind? Did it cause trouble?
Write 2 or 3 short recount sentences from what your student tells you on a sheet of paper. (For example, Once I swapped a Match Attax card with Jack and a week later he wanted it back! I was annoyed!)
Pause the story at 2 minutes and 19 seconds. Ask your student to predict what will happen next.
Play the rest of the story. Talk to your student about the story. What did they think? Did they like it? Would they ever do such a thing?
Explain that this book is a kind of recount. Explain that the two or three sentences you wrote above are also a recount. Ask them if they can tell you what a recount is from their understanding of the story and the few sentences you wrote. Ask them to write down what they think a recount is. If necessary you can prompt them: A recount is written to retell past events or experiences.
