Main Activity
Tell your student that this week you will continue to work on the features of a newspaper report. Some newspaper reports use quotations from the people involved in the story. Quotations tell us what has been said and who said it. They can help to tell the story by giving the reader the opinions of the people involved.
Please watch the following video which will consider how and why we use quotes in newspaper report writing.
Ask your student - how do you think these quotations make the report more interesting for the reader? (E.g. the reader gains a greater understanding of how the person felt during the event). Use the examples below to help your student understand this concept.
"It was the scariest moment of my life!" the 12-year-old student told us.
"We are so thankful for their help!" said Joe Smith, owner of Buster.Β
If possible, look at a local newspaper, and ask your student to identify the quotations.
Quotations are known as 'direct speech', because they report exactly what has been said by a person. Quotes are put inside speech marks, which you learned about in Week 6.
Look at the Newspaper Headlines Worksheet you completed in Week 9 Lesson 2. You created a headline from a brief summary. Try to provide one quote for each summary, remembering to include all of the speech punctuation. Remember to hold on to the Newspaper Headlines Worksheet for Lesson 3 of Week 11.
