Non-Chronological Reports

Objectives

To draft own writing based on knowledge of text features.

Resources

Lined paper | Non-chronological Report Plan from Lesson 2  | 📄 Non-chronological Report Writing Rubric | 📄 Non-chronological Report Sentence Openers |

Today's Lesson

Spelling

Review the spellings for the test in Lesson 5.

Main Activity

Explain that the work completed today will form the first draft of the final writing piece: a non-chronological report. This can be typed if you would prefer.

Ask your student to write a paragraph for each sub-heading. This is only a rough draft and they should not worry about things such as spelling and punctuation. They will have a chance in the editing phase to go back and fix them. They should, however, be in the habit of starting sentences with a capital letter and ending it with a full stop (or other suitable punctuation like an exclamation mark or question mark).

Be sure to use some of the adjectives and adverbs you included in your work on describing your animal. You should have quite a bank of them now! Try to include technical/formal vocabulary related to the animal and their habitats. Have the Non-chronological Report Sentence Openers available for your student to refer to if necessary.

Assignment

Assignment 5

The WAGOLL (What A Good One Looks Like) is an optional resource that you may want to use before completing the writing task. It provides an opportunity for you to look through a model answer, and make sure you understand the features that will be looked for by the tutor in the assignment. Please watch the video first, as this provides instructions on how to use the WAGOLL documents.
