Today's Lesson
Spelling
For the remainder of Year 3 Part 2, use the Making Spellings Memorable resource to focus on this week's spellings.
Main Activity
Recap with your student on The Oak and the Linden Tree so far, asking him or her to remind you what happened.
Access and talk through with your student the Story Map Example as you discuss the plot. Discuss predictions for how your student thinks the story will end and why. Then display and share the ending.
Ask: What did you think of the reward? Add the final details to the map. Explain that the story is told by a narrator. How would it be different if it was told by one of the characters? Take suggestions from your student, encouraging them to give reasons.
Your student should choose Philemon or Baucis (or one of the unfriendly neighbours for a much harder challenge). They should then think about how the story would change if told from that point of view. Ask: What would we not know? (Jupiter and Mercuryβs exchange on Mount Olympus.) What might have happened before the visitors that day? Your student should use clues presented in the story setting (e.g. they may have fed the goose, watered the cabbage etc.).
Ask your student then to draw a new story map to tell the story of the transformation of their home, focusing on point of view and including details added through prediction and inference, e.g. thoughts and feelings of the point of view character.
