Today's Lesson
Spelling
Look at the words below and do a pre-test. This means that you are checking how well your student can spell these words before you teach them. You do not need to focus on the words your student spelled correctly the first time.
Rule: Words with the /s/ sound spelt sc (Latin in origin) (e.g. science, ascent... etc.)
- science
- scene
- discipline
- fascinate
There are many activities you can do during the week to practise spellings. Please see the Spelling Activity Sheet under General Resources and use them as you see fit for your student.
Dictation
- His best subject was science.
- The scene at the seaside showed lots of sandcastles.
- To be a good reader you need discipline.
- Watching the lambs being born was to fascinate the children.
Main Activity
Tell your student that today you will continue to focus on recounts. Ask your student to tell you what a recount is.
A recount retells an experience or an event that happened in the past.ย The purpose of a recount can be to inform, entertain or to reflect and evaluate.
A recount can focus on a specific section of an event or retell the entire story.ย A recount should always be told in the order that things happened and are written in the past tense.
Explain to your student that this week they will be creating their own recount.
Watch Diary of a Fly, by Doreen Cronin.
WATCH - Diary of a Fly (YouTube)
Discuss the story with your student. Explain that this is a recount in the form of a diary. They report things that have happened, usually a recount for each day.
If time, talk about reasons for writing a diary.
