Today's Lesson

Spelling

Review spelling words to prepare for your test at the end of the week.

Main Activity

Have the completed poster board visible so that it can be referred to as necessary. Yesterday you planned your hedgehog newspaper report and today you will work on the headline and introduction.

Ask your student to read through their plan from Lesson 3 of this week. Now remind yourselves of headlines by looking at the Newspaper Headlines Worksheet that was completed in Week 9 Lesson 2. Write a headline that you would like to use on lined paper (don’t worry about the layout at this point. This will be done when you write the final draft).

Next you will write the introduction to your newspaper article. Begin by reminding your student what an introduction looks like for a newspaper article. Read through the highlighted section of Introduction for Newspaper ReportΒ and ask them to tell you what needs to be in the introduction (the 5Ws: who, what, when, where, why). The second page highlights key points.

Using their plan from Lesson 3 (and Results of the Dice Game if useful), ask your student to write the introduction for their newspaper article under the headline. They may find the Newspaper Word Mat helpful. Remember not to worry too much about spellings, grammar, etc as this will be addressed at the editing stage.
