Today's Lesson

Spelling

Take the spelling test by asking your student to write the words they have been learning this week.

Main Activity

Ask: Where were the cultural stories we looked at in Lessons 1 and 2 from? They were from Africa.

Look at a map (in an atlas or online) and find Africa. Identify some of its countries.

Ask your student to share any background knowledge or experiences they might have. If you live in Africa, discuss any other folk tales from Africa your student might know. Do a bit of research online to further your understanding of how the folktales originated.

Next, read the other story and compare and contrast both of them.

Ask: How are they the same? How are they different? Compare the written versions to the oral re-telling. Which does your student prefer? Why? Use the Comparing and contrasting folktales activity sheet.

Ask your student to write a short review of one of the tales. This can be one paragraph advising someone as to which tale they enjoyed more and whether they would rather read it or hear it. Remind your student that they must support their ideas with specifics from the story. This should be at least five sentences but does not need to be longer than a paragraph. You could use the Book review writing frameΒ to do this.
