Introduction

For today’s lesson we will get back to the features of a newspaper report.

Tell your student that today you will focus on photographs and captions. Photos and captions help to tell the story by giving readers a snapshot of what happened, where it happened or who it happened to. Photos also need a caption underneath them. A caption is a short sentence explaining what is happening in the photograph.

If you have a local newspaper, look for photos and read out the caption. Discuss how the caption helps the reader to understand what is in the picture or the relevance of it to the article.

Main Activity

Display the Writing Captions Resource and talk through with your student the different examples. There is a sheet to go alongside this powerpoint (Write the Caption Worksheet), which you may also want to use.
