Today's Lesson

Introduction

Recap briefly on the sentence work completed in Lesson 1 (pages 12–13), reminding your student that all sentences need the correct verb to be used.

Main Activity

Next, turn to page 8 in the Nelson Grammar Pupil Book 3. Today’s focus is on ‘singular and plural’. Tell your student this is about choosing the correct verb, depending on how many nouns (objects / ‘things’) are in the sentence.

Please watch the following video which will guide your student in terms of identifying singular and plural verbs.

Read through the examples at the top of page 8 and make sure your student understands the idea. Complete ‘Focus’, ‘Practice’ and ‘Extension’ on pages 8 and 9.

Using the instruction planning sheet provided, review the video you watched in the prior lesson (alternatively, you could use a recipe) and fill out the organiser together. Discuss as you complete the organiser and again once you are finished.

Assignment

Tell your student that by the end of this week, they are going to complete their own instructional text, ready to submit to their tutor with their writing task in Assignment 1.

Ask your student what their instructions will need to include. (E.g. bossy or imperative verbs, adverbs, chronological order.) You can refer to the instruction planning sheet as you do this.

📄 REVIEW - Instruction Planning Drawing Sheet

Allow your student to brainstorm some ideas for instructions. Encourage them to use something simple that they are familiar with and will be able to carry out.

Once they have chosen a topic, ask them to use the Planning Drawing Sheet to plan their instructional text. Once completed, they should write out the steps of their instructions on a sheet of paper.
