Similes

Objectives

To create simple figurative language, including similes.

Resources

Nelson Grammar Pupil Book 3 | Blank paper | Pens, felt tips | 📄 Simile Starters

Today's Lesson

Spelling

Take the spelling test by asking your student to write the words they have been learning this week.

Main Activity

Today, access the Simile Starters resource and look at the beginnings of these similes. For each, ask your student to think of at least three endings. For example, as blue as the sea; as blue as the sky; as blue as can be (this means feeling sad). Explain that some similes are literal, e.g. the sky is blue (sometimes!), and the sea does look blue (sometimes!), but when we ‘feel blue’ this is not literal; it is a ‘figure of speech’; it means we feel sad, and the colour blue helps us to say this.

Once completed, ask your student to choose two or three of their favourite similes, and create a poster displaying the simile, with illustrations around it / with it, to help us understand what the simile is describing.

Grammar check

Turn to page 48 in Nelson Grammar Pupil Book 3. Work through the information in the purple box at the top of the page.

Clarify that your student understands the meaning of the different prefixes, and can give you examples of words which use them.

Use a traditional or online dictionary to explore more words containing these prefixes.

Ask your student to complete ‘Focus’, ‘Practice’ and ‘Extension’ on pages 48 and 49.
