Today's Lesson

Spelling

Look at the words below and do a pre-test. This means that you are checking how well your student can spell these words before you teach them. You do not need to focus on the words your student spelled correctly the first time.

Rule: Words with the /eɪ/ sound spelt ei, eigh, or ey (e.g. eight, they... etc.)

  • weigh
  • eight
  • neighbour
  • they

There are many activities you can do during the week to practise spellings. Please see the Spelling Activity Sheet under General Resources and use them as you see fit for your student.

Dictation

  1. She could see the vein in her arm.
  2. To make the cake Jane needed to weigh the flour.
  3. On Jack's next birthday, he will be eight.
  4. My next door neighbour is called Joshua.
  5. They like to play outside in the sunshine.

Main Activity

This week's lessons are all leading to Assignment 5.

Before starting this lesson, find 5 objects that look and feel different (you could also include an object that has a strong smell!). Place them in a bag.

Explain to your student that today’s lesson is all about adjectives. Can they remember what an adjective is? (Remind them if necessary that they describe the noun).

Make sure that the Adjectives resource sheet is available to your student.

Show your student the bag (with the objects inside) and ask them to feel (or smell) one of them without looking at it. How does it feel? Using the Hidden Objects resource sheet, encourage your student to note down some adjectives to describe it.

Can they guess what the object is? Now, ask them to reveal the object, were they right?! Now that they can see it, how would they describe it? Encourage your student to note down some more adjectives.

Repeat this with the other four objects. It’s OK if you don’t have time for all 5 objects. The main focus is using adjectives, so make sure that you allow time for your student to think of adjectives that best suit the object.
