Today's Lesson

Spelling

Take the spelling test by asking your student to write the words they have been learning this week.

Main Activity

Today your student will begin writing his or her poem. They can use free verse or write in rhyming couplets. Using what they wrote yesterday, go through and see if there are places where sensory imagery, adjectives (they can use a thesaurus) and or adverbs can be included. It helps to use word boxes for each of the aforementioned so that when they are writing their poem, they have words to choose from. Show your student the rubric provided so they know what is expected before they begin drafting their poems.

Allow them to complete a draft of their poem and then step away from writing for an hour or two. It is good to look over it again with fresh eyes and even read it aloud to see if they might make changes. Stress that editing is a very important part of any writing and that there is always room to improve on a first draft.

Once the final copy of the poem is complete, you might ask them to read it aloud for family or even make a recording of your student reading it. They should then score it using the poetry rubric by highlighting the areas that they feel their poem has achieved.
