Look at the words below and do a pre-test. This means that you are checking how well your student can spell these words before you teach them. You do not need to focus on the words your student spelled correctly the first time.

Main Activity

Access Pinpoint Comprehension Unit 13 - The Emperor and the Nightingale. Read the text with your student, taking it in turns to read a small section at a time. Model good fluency and expression to your student, and expect them to do the same to you, as appropriate to their reading skills.

Ask: is this fiction or non fiction? It is fiction because it is an extract from a story. Do they know this story? It may be a story that they wish to read the whole of, if they enjoy this extract.

Discuss the events and the characters in the story. Ask your student to prepare the text by highlighting unfamiliar words or phrases - discuss these with you and / or look up in a dictionary.

Next week, your student will recap on the text and answer the questions.
