Today's Lesson

Spelling

Look at the words below and do a preโ€“test. This means that you are checking how well your student can spell these words before you teach them. You do not need to focus on the words your student spelled correctly the first time.

Rule: More prefixes (1โ€“3) -dis, -in, and -il.

  • disappoint
  • disagree
  • disobey
  • inactive
  • incorrect
  • illegal

Dictation

  1. I do my best so that I don't disappoint.
  2. I disagree with my brother.
  3. To disobey the rules is wrong.
  4. Sitting on the sofa is inactive.
  5. To spell a word wrong makes it incorrect.
  6. It is illegal to drop rubbish.

Finally, when your student has finished writing and editing, go over the sentences and check for accuracy. Did they use capital letters and full stops? Are the words spelt correctly?

Main Activity

Begin by explaining that this week you will focus on creating interesting sentences and eventually paragraphs. Next, review what a sentence is.ย The following video will guide your student through the key features of sentences and will be helpful to watch to refresh existing knowledge.

Ask your student to remind you of what is needed to make a simple sentence (a capital letter, subject, verb, some sort of punctuation). Ask your student to identify some simple sentences either in this lesson or from a book by a favourite author. Ask your student to identify each part of the sentence.
