Today's Lesson

Spelling

Look at the words below and do a pre-test. This means that you are checking how well your child can spell these words before you teach them. You do not need to focus on the words your student spelled correctly the first time.

Rule: Words with endings sounding like /ʒə/ or /tʃə/ e.g. adventure, creature... etc.)

  • measure
  • treasure
  • pleasure
  • enclosure

Dictation

  1. I like to measure how tall I am.
  2. The pirate chest was full of treasure.
  3. Eating an ice cream gives great pleasure.
  4. The horse was kept in the enclosure.

Main Activity

Tell your student that today you will begin working on newspaper reports. Please be aware that lessons will now be providing your student with background knowledge ready for the written task (a newspaper report) for Assignment 3.

Begin by accessing prior knowledge. Using either a KWL Chart or mind map, ask your student to tell you everything they know about newspapers, newspaper reports and reporters. They can write it in the ‘K’ section of their chart or you can write for them if necessary.

Next look at the Guy Fawkes Night resource. Go over any words that might be new or unfamiliar. Try to figure out what the words mean by the context of the sentence and then check using a dictionary.

Complete the questions and write a responding email as outlined in the resource.
