Today's Lesson
Spelling
Review spelling words to prepare for your test at the end of the week. Use Spelling Frame Practice/Test to learn this week's words. Use the Begin Practice option here.
Main Activity
The next few lessons will consist of some language and sentence games to encourage your student to develop confidence, stamina and ideas for writing. Language and sentence games are great to include regularly in lessons, and can open up the learner’s mind to new ways of thinking and, therefore, writing. They are also a good way to apply their own existing skills, and their grammar and punctuation skills, which sometimes pose a challenge to learners.
Game 1: Random Words
Choose a book. Ask your student for a number - this gives you the page to turn to. Ask for another number - this gives you the line. Ask for a small number - this gives you the word. Your student then has 15 seconds to write a sentence containing the word. Insist on capital letter, making sense, and full stop.
Repeat the process a few times so your student gets used to and enjoys the challenge. Make it harder by reducing the time limit / easier by increasing.
Repeat the process again, this time with two or three words chosen at random.
Game 2: Noun and Verb
Ask your student for a list of nouns, e.g. pencil, ruler, phone. Then make a list of verbs, e.g. sipped, stole, rushed. The game is to invent sentences that include a noun and a verb from the lists. This can be fun if the noun and verb do not match in a sensible way!
- The engine sipped…
- The ruler stole…
- The pencil rushed…
Now ask your student to complete the sentences, preferably choosing some unusual ideas.
Grammar check
We will be using ‘Grammar check’ as a way of covering some new and / or already learnt grammar skills. This will involve using Nelson Grammar Pupil Book 3.
Grammar check: Turn to page 8 in Nelson Grammar Pupil Book 3. Work through the information in the purple box at the top of the page.
Clarify that your student understands the way we use is/are, depending on whether there is a singular (is) or plural (are) noun.
Ask your student to complete ‘Focus’, ‘Practice’ and ‘Extension’ on pages 8 and 9.
