Spelling

Look at the words below and do a pre-test. This means that you are checking how well your student can spell these words before you teach them. You do not need to focus on the words your student spelled correctly the first time.

Rule: Adding suffixes beginning with vowel letters to words of more than one syllable.

📄 PRACTISE - Weekly Spelling Activities

Introduction

Turn to pages 6 and 7 in your Year 3 CGP Comprehension Book (note this might be pages 2 and 3 in some versions of the book).

Ahead of the lesson, tutors should read through through ‘Harriet’s Hare’ first. Check for vocabulary that your student may be unfamiliar with and be ready to discuss this with them when they read the text.

Main Activity

Ask your student to read Harriet’s Hare aloud. Discuss any words that are unfamiliar. Once your student has finished reading, as a quick grammar review, ask them to identify three nouns (person, place or thing, e.g. farmhouse, cows, house) and three verbs (doing or being words, e.g. waiting, see, ran) from the text.

Talk about the questions on page 7 by reading each question aloud to your student and discussing the answer for each in turn. Do not complete any written answers today; spend time just discussing the text and the questions.

Show them how to respond to the questions by:

  1. Showing them where to look in the text for the answer.
  2. Discussing the meaning of the answer.
  3. Saying the answer out loud.

Once finished discussing the questions on page 7, talk with your student about his or her favourite author. Do they have any books by this author? If so, look on the inside cover for information. You may also use the internet to find information on this author.

Ask your student to begin filling out an Author Investigation graphic organiser. These facts can be single words or short phrases; they do not have to be full sentences. You have a choice of two graphic organisers. Use the one you think is best for your student.
