Today's Lesson

Introduction

As you begin today’s lesson, say to your student - yesterday we looked at several poems but before we begin to write our own, we need to figure out or investigate what makes a poem a poem. To study this, let’s read something a student wrote:

My family owns the friendliest cow you could ever meet. She is red and white and I really love her. She loves to travel around our fields which are all fenced in, of course. We don’t want her to wander out on the road and get hurt. She seems quite happy to be out in the field whether it is raining, sunny, windy or cloudy. We take care of her and she gives us lots of milk and my favourite - cream for apple tart!

Discuss the paragraph above. Does it make sense? Is there a clear beginning, middle and end?

Main Activity

Next, turn to page 8 and read ‘Nature Trail’ in Year 3 CGP Comprehension Book. (Note: It may be page 6 in some versions of the textbook).

Read and enjoy the poem together. Ask: Is this a poem? How do you know?

Talk about the structural elements of poetry (rhyme, rhythm, stanzas, line breaks).

📄 DISCUSS - Visual Aid

Finally, answer the questions, supporting your student by discussing them first, finding answers in the text and then supporting with written answers. Refer to the answers provided to help guide your student.

Refer also to the steps in Week 1 Lesson 1 which are:

  1. Showing them where to look in the text for the answer.
  2. Discussing the meaning of the answer.
  3. Saying the answer out loud.

Handwriting and Spelling

Review spelling words to prepare for a test at the end of the week. You may wish to use Spelling Frame. Use the Segment Cards to listen to the parts of the word. You can remove the words you are not learning, by clicking on them, then Show Me. You may wish to play some of the games, or explore the Printables at the bottom of the page.
