π PRACTISE - Making Spellings Memorable
Main Activity
Watch the following video that will explain how we can use conjunctions to add clauses and develop our sentence writing.
Then, show your student the Ceres image and remind them that this Roman goddess was goddess of harvests. Share The story of Ceres, from the same resource, with your student.
Write down: The tree was special. Agree that this is a single clause / simple sentence. It makes sense. Explain that you want to add another clause to give a bit more information - to answer the question: Why?
Write: It belonged to Ceres. Read and agree that this is also a clause. Because the two clauses are closely linked (the second explains the first), you are going to join them together with the conjunction: because. Rewrite this as an extended sentence:
The tree was special because it belonged to Ceres.
Repeat this process asking for a different reason the tree was special (It was home to many birds. The children loved to climb it.):
The tree was special because it was home to many birds.
The tree was special because the children loved to climb it.
Then repeat with clause: Eric hid behind the oak tree. Asking the question: When? Rewrite as an extended sentence, e.g.:
Eric hid behind the oak tree when he was playing hide and seek.
Eric hid behind the oak tree when he was feeling mischievous.
Access and discuss the Conjunctions resource together. Ask your student to retell 'The story of Ceres' using clauses extended by conjunctions. Encourage lots of verbal practice as your student retells the story, initially guided by Using ConjunctionsΒ resource, then continuing to tell the story.
