Review spelling words to prepare for your test at the end of the week.
Main Activity
We will now revisit sentence types again, one last time before the end of Year 3 Part 3. Over the next few days, we will focus on subordinate clauses and how we use subordinating conjunctions to turn them into complex sentences. This is some revision and recapping, as we did touch on complex sentences earlier in Year 3 Part 3. We then focused more deeply on co-ordinating conjunctions, and how we use these to make compound sentences.
Recap with your student on the learning that they did on compound sentences in Week 31. It would be useful to access the lesson plans and resource, and ask your student to write:
-
A simple sentence / main clause (a group of words that contains a verb and makes sense on its own; no conjunction).
-
E.g. I was so hungry.
-
Another simple sentence which is in the same theme as the first simple sentence.
-
E.g. I waited for my dinner.
-
A compound sentence by joining the two simple sentences together with either ‘and’, ‘but’ or ‘so’.
-
E.g. I was so hungry so I waited for my dinner.
Practise this a few times to ensure confidence.
When ready, ask your student to complete the Birthday Party Sheet, where they need to write compound sentences. Encourage them to make the sentences as interesting as possible using descriptions.
