PRACTISE - Segment Cards (Spelling Frame)

Main Activity

Begin the day by reviewing yesterday’s lesson. Have a look back over what every letter should have (either the list or mind map). Ask your student if they have thought of anything they should add to the list? Once complete, say to your student: today we are going to listen to another story about letters. Next read The Jolly Postman or Other People’s Letters by Janet and Allen Ahlberg.

Watch the video a second time so you can pause to inspect a letter just as you did yesterday. Discuss how it is written. Is it the same or different to the letters seen yesterday? Is there anything they’d like to add to their list/mind map?

Ask your student to tell you what happened in the story (help your student retell the story in order if they become muddled).

Finally, compare and contrast the two stories. Did your student prefer one over the other? Why? Why do they think people write letters? Do they tell you about things that have already happened? Can they tell you about things that are about to happen? How do you know?

Add to your list/mind map. Share the Informal Letter Writing Checklist . Does your student need to add anything to their list?
