Today's Lesson

Spelling

For the remainder of Year 3 Part 2, use the Making Spellings Memorable resource to focus on this week's spellings.

Main Activity

Remind your student about their story map.

Explain: We could use this map to retell the story to someone else aloud. Ask: But what if Philemon or Baucis wanted to tell a relative who lived far away? They didn’t have telephones, texts, email or messaging apps so would have to write a letter! What might they put in a letter to explain their sudden change of fortune? Discuss ideas and model the opening of a letter from Philemon or Baucis to a cousin, explaining what happened yesterday. Emphasise: We will have to use the word ‘I’ to talk about ourselves.

Explain to your student that they should build interesting sentences aloud before recording them.

Your student should work independently to write a letter to a cousin, retelling the myth from the point of view of Philemon or Baucis. Encourage your student to include details such as feelings, hopes and comments. They should include some dialogue (punctuated) in their letter, but limit this to one or two interesting examples.

Check: Have they remembered to use first person (I)? Have they told the story from the character’s point of view?
