Today's Lesson

Spelling

Look at the words below and do a pre-test. This means that you are checking how well your student can spell these words before you teach them. You do not need to focus on the words your student spelled correctly the first time.

Rule: Possessive apostrophe with plural words.

  • girls' (more than one girl)
  • boys' (more than one boy)
  • babies' (more than one baby)
  • children's
  • men's

There are many activities you can do during the week to practise spellings. Please see the Spelling Activity Sheet under General Resources and use them as you see fit for your student.

Dictation

  1. The girls' coats were in a pile.
  2. The boys' trainers were muddy after the walk.
  3. The babies' toys were all over the floor.
  4. The children's playground has a new swing.
  5. The men's voices are very loud.

Main Activity

Explain to your student that this week they will be writing their own non-chronological report for Assignment 5.

Non-chronological reports are mostly written in the present tense (eg Gerbils have fur), unless writing a historical non-chronological report about something in the past then it will be in the past tense (eg Dinosaurs lived millions of years ago).

At this point, please watch the following video which will support your student’s understanding of the importance of tense in non-chronological report writing.

Explain to your student that for this non-chronological report we are imagining the animal is still in the world today, so the report will be written in the present tense.

Check your students understandsing by asking them to change these past tense verbs into the present tense:

  • Ate
  • Ran
  • Lived
  • Hunted
  • Grew
  • Roared
  • Slept

Ask your student to look at the picture of their animal that they created yesterday. Have they used any verbs? If they have make sure they are changed to the present tense. If there are no verbs, ask your student to add some present tense ones now.

Assignment

Assignment 5

The WAGOLL (What A Good One Looks Like) is an optional resource that you may want to use before completing the writing task. It provides an opportunity for you to look through a model answer, and make sure you understand the features that will be looked for by the tutor in the assignment. Please watch the video first, as this provides instructions on how to use the WAGOLL documents.
