Today's Lesson

Spelling

Take the spelling test by asking your student to write the words they have been learning this week.

Main Activity

7c.pngBefore the lesson: Access the Dice template, print out onto A4 card (or paper), cut out and then write a conjunction on each face of the cube:

  • when
  • when
  • if
  • although
  • because
  • because.

('because' and 'when' are repeated as they are more commonly used.)

Make the dice by folding the edges. Your student could help with this as it is good practice for 3D shape construction.

Recap with your student on the conjunctions we focused on yesterday. They make complex sentences: a sentence with a main clause and a subordinate clause. Roll the dice. Model saying and then writing a complex sentence using that conjunction that you landed on. Ask your student to do the same.

If he or she is finding this difficult at first, choose a topic of interest, and say and write sentences all about that topic.

Whilst you are having your goes, make ‘accidental’ mistakes when you are writing your sentence, and see if your student can correct you. E.g. forget your capital letter and / or full stop; write it so it doesn’t make sense by missing out a word, or by choosing an inappropriate subordinate clause which doesn’t match the meaning of the conjunction.
