Today's Lesson
Spelling
Review spelling words to prepare for your test at the end of the week.Β You can choose any resource from Spelling Frame to help learn this week's words.
Main Activity
Ask your student to remind you of what a myth is. Deal with any confusion now. Look again at the Venn diagram from the last lesson, if necessary.
Explain that todayβs lesson will be looking at a myth and the role of Roman gods.
Use the Horrible Histories video as a fun way to introduce Roman gods. Watch the video and discuss it with your student. What do they know about the Romans? What did the video teach us?
WATCH - Horrible Histories: Roman Gods (YouTube)
Access the Roman Gods and Goddesses Cards. Look at these with your student. Note that Romans had many gods, that were based on Mount Olympus.
Share the Ganymede story with your student. They should listen carefully to the myth as it is read to them. Encourage them to spot the god/goddess as they appear in the story. They could also join in with some of the actions suggested by the plot!
Check your student has understood the story through discussion. What have they learnt about Roman gods from this oral story? See the Adult Reference Sheet (under Ganymede story) to help create a list.
Ask your student to create a story map to plot the main events of the myth (you may find the Sequencing Template useful). Support them with this by helping to use the story and the Roman Gods and Goddesses Cards for reference.
When finished and if there is time, they can use the story maps to retell the myth out loud.
Emphasise that oral retellings of a written story will be different to the written version.
If you have time, you could do some of your own research about Romans. This fun kids website has some key facts.
