📄 PRACTISE - Making Spellings Memorable
Main Activity
Remind your student of the idea of the gods watching the mortal world. Remind them of Jupiter’s promise to Ganymede – to help Troy prosper for a time.
Explain that the next story happens in Troy when Mars brings the Greeks to invade Troy. Read ‘Dreams of Destiny’. Involve your student as you read: creating flames in Troy/the storm winds/supporting the Greeks in their battle through arm-movements etc.
Discuss the story and note any additional features of myths to those listed in the previous lesson. Also add to list of what your student knows about Roman gods.
Access the Word Classes worksheet, and read and discuss together. Is your student confident with each word class: its function and being able to identify examples in the text?
If not, you may wish to watch the following video that will re-cap each of the word classes listed in turn.
Ask your student to go on a ‘word hunt’, reading the simplified Dreams of Destiny text, picking out interesting words and classifying according to word class (in the context that they read). Your student should write individual words on a sticky note and stick it in the correct place on the Word Classes worksheet. Discussing the categorisations. How can you test if something is a noun (object, place or person), adjective (describes a noun), verb (doing or being word) or adverb (describes the verb)?
