Today's Lesson
Spelling
Review spelling words to prepare for your test at the end of the week. Try the Printables and Traceable Word List at the bottom of page on Spelling Frame.
Introduction
Explain to your student that today you will talk about how news reports are organised. Just like stories you write, newspaper articles or reports are written in paragraphs and in columns. Make sure you have your KWL chart and local newspaper for this lesson.
Now watch the following video which will help you to spot the key features of newspaper report writing.
Main Activity
Looking at a local newspaper, ask your student to point out the headline, by-line, paragraphs, columns. Tell them that all reports must have an introduction. The introduction is the first paragraph. It sets the scene and summarises the main points of the article telling who, what, when, where.
Now it’s time to be a text detective! Look at an article (or a few if necessary) in your newspaper. Can you identify these important points in your article? (You could use a magnifying glass to help you!) Try to answer the following questions: Who is the article about? What happened? When did it happen? Where did it happen? Use the resource Identifying Important Points in an Article to help record your findings.
📝 COMPLETE - Identifying Important Points in an Article
The second paragraph is called the body. It provides more detail about the event, in particular it answers the questions how and why. Again, look at an article from your local newspaper and read the body. Can you answer how and why the event happened?
Looking again at your article, what else do you know now? (It is okay to discuss this part - it doesn’t need to be written down).
Add to your KWL chart.
