PRACTISE - Segment Cards (Spelling Frame)

Main Activity

By the end of this week, your student will be writing their first short story.

Before you discuss this with your student, ask them to tell you what they already know about story writing. Begin filling out the KWL Chart.

๐Ÿ“„ PREPARE - KWL Chart

If they are struggling to come up with ideas on their own, prompt them by saying things like: what do all stories contain - characters, a setting where the story takes place, a beginning, middle and end.ย  Once you have completed the โ€˜Kโ€™ section of your chart - give them three or four minutes to fill out the โ€˜Wโ€™ or wonder section.

Next, look atย  Graphic Organiser 1 & 2ย togetherย to review the different parts of a story.

๐Ÿ“„ REVIEW - Roller Coaster Graphic Organiser 2

Look first at the roller coaster containing the elements of a story. Go through each box or car and explain that every fiction story should contain these elements, and each of these elements will get its own paragraph (sometimes more than one).

Once you have completed the work above, using either a short picture book or a Pixar Short, work with your student to see if you can identify the elements of the short story or Pixar Short of your choosing. Fill in the blankOrganiser together and then discuss it. Finally, using another picture book or Pixar Short, ask your student to do one on their own.
