Today's Lesson

Spelling

Look at the words below and do a pre-test. This means that you are checking how well your student can spell these words before you teach them. You do not need to focus on the words your student spelled correctly the first time.

Rule: Words with the /Κƒ/ sound spelt ch (mostly French in origin) (e.g. chalet, chef... etc.)

  • chef
  • chalet
  • machine
  • brochure

There are many activities you can do during the week to practise spellings. Please see the Spelling Activity Sheet under General Resources and use them as you see fit for your student.

PRACTISE - General Resources

Dictation

  1. The chef made some really tasty food.
  2. We stayed in a chalet on our holiday.
  3. The washing machine cleans clothes really well.
  4. The toys in the brochure looked great.

Main Activity

Tell your child that this week they will be studying poetry from around the world.

Explain to your student that today you will be looking at phrases and prepositions but before you do, ask them to remind you what a noun, verb, preposition and adverb are. Remind them that they looked at this last week and the week before.Β You might have to help them remember!

Explain that a phrase does not have a verb so it is different from a sentence. You will see examples of phrases in the video. Watch the following video and then make a list of all the prepositions you can think of and any phrases you saw – you can use the table in the Prepositions and Phrases resources document to record this.

Think of some examples of sentences together. Explain that prepositions can tell us where something happens (place and position), when something happens (time) and why something happens (cause).

Complete the Prepositions activity.
