What to Get Ready

4c.pngAhead of the lesson, access the three poems and browse through them.

πŸ“„ READ - Poem 1 - Firework Night

πŸ“„ READ - Poem 2 - The Crocodile

πŸ“„ READ - Poem 3 - The Eagle

Choose a couple of poems that would be of a suitable reading challenge for your student.

Main Activity

Read the chosen poems to your student. Then ask them to read the poems with you together. Finally, ask your student to choose one of the poems to read aloud by themselves. Can they use their voice expressively, with enjoyment and feeling, to perform the poem?

Use a dictionary to check the meaning of unfamiliar words from the poems. Show your student how to use the dictionary to find words alphabetically.

Discuss the meaning of the new words and if there are any words we know that mean similar things.

Discuss any words that are not found in the dictionary and discuss why this might be. Perhaps because the words are written to sound like they are from a specific culture, so spellings may have been changed.
