Main Activity
Recap on the use of -ing verbs to open sentences. Ask your student to choose three -ing verbs. They can be from yesterday’s lesson or they could be new. Write three new sentences which start with each of the -ing verbs. How dramatic, scary or exciting can you make them?
The next opener we will focus on is a preposition. Can your student remember what a preposition is? It is usually one word (but can sometimes be a group of words), and usually tells us where something is.
At this point, you may wish to watch the following video that will explain how prepositions can be used as effective sentence openers.
For the sake of this week’s learning on openers, we will focus on where. Look at these prepositions: Over… Under… Beneath… As yesterday, when you generated -ing verbs, do the same with prepositions, and then ask your student to choose five to start sentences with.
If needed, use an online dictionary and / or thesaurus to generate more prepositions.
