PRACTISE - Spelling Frame

Main Activity

Today, spend some time reading different texts with your student, or they may be able to do this independently, and look for ways in which sentences have been started in different texts - stories, information texts, newspapers, leaflets, magazines etc.

Ask your student how we could record our findings. Ask: Which sorts of sentence openers have we found? How could we sort them? Can you find any that could be grouped together? Why?

You may find the following model a useful starting point:

  • Articles: The, A, An
  • Prepositions: In, On, Over, Under, Beneath
  • Conjunctions: Because, When, If, While
  • Nouns: People, Cats
  • Others: _____________

Grammar check

Watch the following video.

Then turn to page 40 in Nelson Grammar Pupil Book 3. Work through the information in the purple box at the top of the page.

This gives some further consolidation to prepositions and how they can be used in sentences.

Ask your student to complete ‘Focus’, ‘Practice’ and ‘Extension’ on pages 40 and 41.
