Today's Lesson

Introduction

Turn to page 12 in the Nelson Grammar Pupil Book 3.

Review with your student what a verb is (it is a doing or being word). Explain that a verb tells us what is being done, or what is happening.

You may find it helpful at this point to watch the following video which will summarise what verbs are and how they can be found in writing.

Complete ‘Practice’ and ‘Extension’ on page 13.

Then, review these tasks with your student by discussing how well they are doing in choosing the correct verb for each of the sentences.

Then, ask your student to complete ‘Focus’ on page 12. This is a punctuation focus which requires your student to add capital letters and full stops correctly. This is a skill which may well require regular reinforcement.

Main Activity

After they have completed the exercises on pages 12 and 13, ask your student to tell you what they remember from Lesson 1. It is okay to refer back to their KWL chart from Lesson 1! They should free to add to it as well!

Explain to your student that instructions are only good if you can actually follow them. To explain, watch the video on how to make a pirate hat.

WATCH - How to Make a Pirate Hat out of Paper (YouTube)

Get a piece of paper or newspaper, watch the video a second time and ask your student to try to make the hat. Ask them to explain what happened. Ask: Were the instructions hard or easy to follow? Why? Where they in the right order (sequenced)? What would you do differently if you were making the video? Allow your student to make a video if you like!
