Main Activity

We will be focusing on descriptive speaking and writing over the next few days, and your student will complete a written description for the creative writing task in Assignment 8. We will then revisit sentence types and conjunctions in a little more detail after this.

Today, look at the scenarios below with your student. Use them as an opportunity to encourage your student to describe in as much detail as possible. As they talk, write down words and phrases that are interesting, exciting, and perhaps different to what they would normally say. Model speaking and using new and different words and phrases.

You find an old suitcase in your dusty attic. Describe the things you find inside.

  • How old are the objects? What do they look like? Who do you think the suitcase may have belonged to?

 Describe what a tree looks like in autumn. Think about:

  • The colours; the sounds; the textures.

 Think of ten exciting words beginning with the letter ‘a’. Write them down. Choose a few to put into a sentence and say the sentences out loud. Think about:

  • Choosing some long and short words
  • What the words mean.

 If your toys were to come alive whilst you were asleep, what sort of things would they get up to? Think about:

  • The things they would say;
  • The feelings they would have;
  • The things they would do and the places they would go.

 Imagine that an alien visited earth for the day. Think about:

  • How you would speak to him / her;
  • The sorts of things you would do together;
  • What places you would want to show him / her.

 Describe your dream holiday. Think about:

  • Where you would go;
  • What sorts of things you would want to do there;
  • Who you would want to go with.
