PRACTICE - Traceable Word List (Spelling Frame)
Introduction
Once again, remind your student about your discussion of books over the previous two lessons. Ask them to recall any information they can.
Main Activity
Tell your student that today you are going to look at some books and focus on the table of contents, index, and glossary. Ask: do you know what any of these things are? If so, can they tell you more about them?
Table of Contents
Works of fiction seldom have tables of content, whereas works of non–fiction almost always do. At the beginning of the book, they include the titles of chapters as well as subtitles and page numbers. Ask your student to try to locate the Contents in one of their Collins’ books.
Glossary
Found at the back of the book, the glossary provides definitions of special words within the text. Publishers often place words to be found in the back in bold print. Sometimes the definitions are found adjacent (next to) to the text, but always in the glossary. If you have a History or Science textbook available, ask your student to locate the glossary.
Index
Also, in the back of the book, the index identifies where topics can be found, in alphabetical order. Ask your student to find the index in a cookbook.
Please be aware that lessons will now be providing your student with background knowledge ready for the written task (an information leaflet) for Assignment 2.
