Today's Lesson
Main Activity
For the mental warm up, call out any random questions from all of the times tables.
Turn to page 78 in Abacus 4 Textbook 3 and look at the page with your student.
The example shows both the ‘ladder’ method and the grid method of multiplication
The ladder method can be performed from right to left, multiplying the ones first. This is perfectly acceptable, and is the precursor step to ‘short’ multiplication.
For Example:
| 6 | 4 | 8 | |
| x | 7 | ||
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 5 | 6 | ||
| 2 | 8 | 0 | |
| 4 | 2 | 0 | 0 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 4 | 5 | 3 | 6 |
By this stage, your student may have identified the method with which they are most comfortable. Ask your student to copy and complete the calculations on the page using their preferred method. Before your student tackles each calculation, ask them to estimate which answers will be more and which less than 3,000.
