Today's Lesson
Main Activity
Turn to pages 32 & 33 in Abacus 4 Textbook 3.
Scan or copy the pages, so your student can write directly on the paper.
Remind your student of the previous lesson, where they counted the squares to find out the area of a shape.
Now draw attention to the other method used for finding the area of a regular shape, where they only need to know the length and width measurements.
When these are multiplied together, the answer will give the area of the shape.
However, when the shape is irregular, as in the second shape on page, it can be helpful to break up the shape into two. Your child will need to do two calculations and add the answers together.Β
Remind them of the importance of writing the answer using the correct unit of measure β in this case, cmΒ² or mΒ².
Once your student has understood the method, ask them to calculate the area of each shape on the page
In exactly the same way, ask your student to complete page 33, working out both the area and the perimeter of each shape.
Remind your student again, if need be, of the correct way to write the two units of measure.
Now complete Assignment 7.
