To recall the process of regrouping where necessary when carrying out subtraction calculations.

Main Activity

For the mental warm ups each day, ask your student to face North. Then tell them to take two steps East, four steps South, one step North and so on.

Repeat this until your student is comfortable with direction instructions using North, South, East and West. Play Follow The Direction (TopMarks)

Turn to page 62 in Abacus 4 Textbook 3.

Ask your student to demonstrate the column method of subtraction, regrouping where necessary. Watch 'Written Subtraction'.

If they have forgotten the method, remind them of how to take one from the digit on the left, adjust the digit downwards and give the ‘1’ to the digit on the right – stress that you only regroup if the bottom digit is larger than the top digit.

Stress the importance of place value.

Once you are happy that your student is comfortable with the concept, encourage them to work independently to copy and complete the calculation on the page.
