Today's Lesson

Main Activity

Choose any number exactly divisible by 6 and ask your student to break the number down in fractions of sixths. For example:

72

1/6 of 72 = 12

2/6 of 72 = 24

3/6 of 72 = 36, and so on.

Do this for a few different numbers in the 6 times table.

Run through some games on 6 Timestable (MyMaths)

Turn to page 25 in Abacus 4 Textbook 1.

Remind your student that the division symbol is the inverse of the multiplication symbol, and we can use our knowledge of multiplication, specifically our times tables to help us with division. For example:

18 ÷ 6 =

can be interpreted as ‘How many lots of 6 are there in 18?’

or, ? x 6 = 18.

Run through the 6 times table until you arrive at the answer 18. Therefore:

3 x 6 = 18

18 ÷ 6 = 3

Once your student is comfortable with the concept, allow them to copy and complete the calculations on the page. Remind your student to include a sentence answer to the calculation for the word problem questions.
