Today's Lesson

Main Activity

Call out a few times and ask your student what that would be in the 24-hour clock, if the time was in the afternoon.

If your student does not know the answer, ask them to simply add 12 hours (or 10 + 2) to the hour number for the 24-hour clock. For example:

Twenty past three in the afternoon = 15:20

Five past one in the afternoon = 13:05

Quarter to ten in the morning = 09:45

Turn to page 33 in Abacus 4 Textbook 1.

Watch Finding unit fractions of amounts (YouTube) to recap if needed.

Further to the previous lesson, ask your student to copy and complete the first section of the page. Look at the bottom section. Use this example:

1/4 of 24 = 6

2/4 of 24 = 6 x 2 = 12

3/4 of 24 = 6 x 3 = 18, and so on.

Watch Fractions of amounts (YouTube) for further examples.

Once your student has worked out what ‘one of’ the fraction is (the unit fraction), they can multiply this number by the numerator (top number of the fraction) to find the final  answer.  Ask your student to copy and complete the bottom section of the page.
