Today's Lesson
Main Activity
Ask your student to recite two times tables, then to answer random questions on these, including division questions.
Look at page 25 in Abacus 4 Textbook 2 with your student.
Watch the video to recap finding fractions of amounts.
Remind them that the bottom number of a fraction (the denominator) tells you how many equal-sized parts the whole number has been divided into. In order to be able to find fractions of numbers, you must first find out the unit fraction, that is ‘one over the denominator’, e.g.1/3, 1/8, 1/4.
For example, to find any number of quarters of 16, we first need to find the value of one quarter:
¼ of 16 = 16 ÷ 4 = 4
We can then calculate the values of larger numbers of quarters:
2/4 of 16 = 2 x ¼ = 2 x 4 = 8
¾ of 16 = 3 x ¼ = 3 x 4 = 12 and so on.
You always have to find the unit fraction first. Then, multiply this number by whatever number is on the top of the fraction (numerator).
Ask your student to copy and complete the page, once you feel that they have fully understood the concept.
