Main Activity

4c.pngFor the mental warm ups each day, ask your student to face North again.

Then give more direction instructions, but this time also involve the directions North East, North West, South East and South West. If you have access to an outside/paved area, it might be helpful to draw with chalk a compass on the ground for your student to refer to if they need reminding of the new directions.

Turn to page 65 in Abacus 4 Textbook 3 and look at the different method.

Ask your student to explain the Frog method to you, used here for finding change – counting up to find the difference between the amount the item costs and the amount tended (Β£20).

Watch Finding Change - Frog Method (YouTube) to recap finding change from Β£5 and Β£10 if needed.

Draw attention to the decimal points and ask your student to explain the numbers on page 65 in the example diagram.

Once you are happy that your student is comfortable counting up with Β£ (pounds) and p (pence), ask them to work independently to copy and complete the subtractions using the Frog method.
