Main Activity
Turn to page 93 in Abacus 4 Textbook 2, to be completed as a mental warm-up.
Turn to page 18 in Abacus 4 Textbook 3.
Look at the sequences with your student and ask them what comes next.
Once your student has shown a good understanding, ask them to copy and complete Questions 1 – 8.
For the second section, ask your student to use the symbols for ‘greater than’ (‘>’) and ‘less than’ (‘<’) appropriately to indicate the larger and smaller numbers. Ask your student to explain how they know – using appropriate vocabulary linked to the place value of the numbers.
Encourage them to write the numbers on a place value chart if this helps their understanding.
For example: Which is the greater numbers, 4.7 or 7.4?
| Ones | . | Tenths |
| 4 | . | 7 |
| 7 | . | 4 |
By looking in the ones column (the largest value column) we can see that 7 is greater than 4 so 7.4 is the bigger number.
Look at the ‘Think’ question and ask your student to talk about how they would go about investigating this, then ask them to try to come up with an answer.
