Today's Lesson
Main Activity
Call out a few random two-digit numbers and ask your student to multiply them by a single digit number, using partitioning or the grid method mentally.
Turn to page 39 in Abacus 4 Textbook 1.
Watch Using a ruler (YouTube)
Using a ruler, show your student how to measure a line. Point out that the start of the line must be on the 0 mark and not the end of the ruler. Show your student the tiny marks of the millimetres and remind your student there are 10mm to 1cm. Ask your student to measure each line as accurately as possible and to write the length of each line beside it in both ways shown. On squared paper, ask your student to draw lines of the lengths specified.
Before tackling the 'Think' section, ask your student how they might go about measuring a line that isn't straight.Β Have a go using their suggestions before using the piece of string. Show your student how to place it on top of the scribbled lines and then how to hold that length of string against the ruler to measure it.
