Today's Lesson

Main Activity

As a mental warm up, call out some random 2 digit numbers and ask your student to add them together mentally, using whichever strategy works best for them.

Turn to page 76 in Abacus 4 Textbook 3.

Look at the map with your student and discuss where your child might have seen a similar map with such information, for example at a travel agent or an airport. Talk about why such information is important to many people.

Look at the calculations and ask why they should multiply by 567.  Once you and your student have discussed the page sufficiently for your student to have a good understanding of what it is about, ask your student to calculate how far the plane could fly in two hours, then estimate where the plane could fly to before completing the next calculations and checking.

Your student may use the grid method (watch Grid Method Multiplication (YouTube) to recap if needed) for these calculations, and may also have a look at the ‘ladder’ method for multiplication (below).  Ask them to solve 234 x 3 using the grid method, then show the method below, comparing how it works.  They should clearly be able to see that the same three multiplication steps have been carried out before addition:

234 multiplied by 3 - split into multiplying by 100s, 10s, units - 600, 90, 12, = 702

Use this new method alongside the grid method if it helps to compare the two.
