Addition
Objectives
To add multiple, larger numbers, keeping place value correct, understanding that the addition process is the same regardless of the size of the numbers.
To understand that the calculations are taken step-by-step, and you are only working with two digits at any time.
To use ‘carrying’ where necessary.

Today's Lesson
Main Activity
For the mental warm up, ask your student to count from zero to 400 in 25s.
Stress the importance of learning this pattern by rote, as you are working with quarters of 100 - a frequently occurring pattern in maths.
Turn to page 59 in Abacus 4 Textbook 3 and discuss the calculations on the page with your child.
Point out that it does not matter how many different numbers there are. What is important is that when written into columns ready for addition, the numbers are aligned so that the place value of digits in any one column is always the same. (See Compact Column Addition (YouTube) which demonstrates how to align the numbers when adding a 4 digit number to a 3 digit number.) Some answers to the addition of the individual digits may come to 10 or more, therefore needing to be carried. Point out that this is not a problem - simply carry the appropriate number of 10s.
Questions 10 onwards will result in additions with totals more than 10 needing to be carried.
Now complete Assignment 8.
Optional Test
Your student has the opportunity to take an optional test at the end of week 32 of this course. The test presents a summary of the concepts your student has studied. Find more information here.
