Main Activity
For the mental exercises ask your child some time-related questions.
For example, conversion of analogue and digital times, 12- and 24- hour time, addition or subtraction of a variety of minutes from specific times.
Turn to page 62 in Abacus 4 Textbook 2.
This video will help show some mental methods for use in Questions 1-12.
Look at the additions with your student. Draw attention to the different number of digits in some of the calculations. Point out that they should not be put off by this; as long as the digits are placed in the correct columns, the column addition calculation will be straightforward. Place value is very important. Remind your student of how to set out the numbers in columns and how to take each column one at a time, starting on the right, just as they did when there were only 2-digit numbers to add.
Ask your student to copy and complete the page. Remind them to include the Β£ symbol as the unit of measure and to carry digits wherever necessary.
